Hound - Patsy - Medium - Senior - Female - Dog
Update 1/21/2013. Patsy still remains in a loving foster home, however her foster family would want nothing more than to see her finally in a loving "forever home". She is now about 10 -11 years old, but has the heart of a puppy. She is very affectionate and loves attention. Her tail is in constant motion and loves anyone who shows kindness and affection to her. She enjoys car rides and short walks. Patsy still has issues with noise anxiety. If she hears gunshots, thunder, or anything that sounds like gunshots, she takes cover immediately. She has certain areas of the house that are her safe havens and will stay there for hours even with encouragement and treats to get her out. Because of her anxiety, she is on medication to help her through it. Her foster mom has a Thunder Shirt and when a storm is brewing, she puts it on her. It does seem somehow to calm her, but again she takes refuge in her "safe-haven." Because of her age, Patsy seems to have "sundown syndrome" where certain times of the day, especially now that the days are shorter, she becomes confused and a little frightened. She seems not to know where she is or who her foster parents are. This may last for several hours or as long as a day. The last time she was in to see the vet, she noticed that Patsy has cataracts and because of this, is having more trouble seeing. Again, this may also contribute to her confusion. She is a gentle loving dog, and would be perfect for an older person or couple who just wants the love of a furry companion. She enjoys laying on the deck when the sun is out, going for rides in the car where she can stick her nose out. eating treats and just curling up in her warm bed. Please don't let her age deter you, she is a wonderful dog who needs someone to love her for the rest of her days. Update 7-10-10. Patsy has settled in so nicely in her foster home. She is a sweetheart who craves affection as well as loves to give affection. She bonds readily with most everyone and tries hard to please. She gets so excited when greeting any of her foster family after only a couple of hours absence. She is definitely a home body and relishes the security of a home that cares for her. Patsy sleeps a lot during the day, but she does have her bursts of energy. She has a few toys that are her favorite and many times they will be found in bed with her. She seems to get along with other dogs, although with the first meeting, she will appear somewhat cautious especially if the other pup comes on too strong. She gets along well with her canine foster sister and they have no issues with sharing food or toys or even a bed.
Patsy does have some fear issues, especially with noises such as gunshots, thunder, sirens and children yelling. Since the weather has turned warmer and there has been much more activity outside, her foster family has noticed she has "panic attacks." If there is a lot of activity going on when she takes her walks she sometimes will go into a panic mode and try to run and find a hole or bush to hide in or under; once she is back in the car or home where she knows she is "safe" she is okay but exhausted from the fear she has experienced. Her foster family has been working with a trainer and have been trying now to desensitize her by taking her for shorter walks in places where she is more familiar and increasing the time and length that she is out walking. They also have been working with her by giving her short doses of the noises she is fearful of. She has also been started on a medication for her anxiety and her foster parents have seen some improvement but will continue to work with her. Throughout all of these incidents, Patsy has never shown any signs of fear aggression. When she is in the home, she finds a safe haven behind a chair or up in a room but is easily coaxed out with a treat.
Patsy just needs an understanding friend to see her through her fears. She would do great in a home that is more low-key and calm. She is very good with children, but because young children can be somewhat unpredictable, she would probably do best wi
